PMI’S LATEST CLINICAL RESULTS: FINDINGS ADD TO EXTENSIVE EVIDENCE PACKAGE ON RISK REDUCTION

39

Philip Morris (Thailand) Limited reports the positive results from Philip Morris International’s new clinical study on its most advanced smoke-free product. The Exposure Response Study (ERS) measured the biological response of people who switch to the smoke-free product for six months compared with continued smoking. The study showed improvements in all eight measures of biological response, with statistical significance in five of the eight.

PMI’s Scientific Assessment Program has rigorously tested smoke-free product over more than 7 years and numerous aerosol chemistry and physics measurements demonstrate that aerosol generated from the smoke-free product contains an average of 90-95% lower levels of harmful constituents. The results support that these reduced emissions translate to reduced toxicity in the laboratory and to reduced exposure in clinical studies.

These results are very encouraging. We believe this study is the first ever clinical study of this magnitude to directly assess the risk-reduction potential of a smoke-free product in people who switch to it. Everything we’ve seen, including these new results, continues to point in the direction of risk reduction,” said Frank Luedicke, PMI’s Chief Medical Officer.

Furthermore, Gerald Margolis, Managing Director of Philip Morris (Thailand) Limited, noted the PMI’s study has the clear results that the smoke-free product has risk-reduction potential for people who switch to it. Apart from PMI’s own study, there are at least 24 independent research studies on its smoke-free product and there are likely to be additional studies in the future.

“We believe smoking cessation is the best solution for smokers who are concerned about the health effects from smoking. However, more than 10 million Thai smokers who continue smoking are looking for less harmful alternatives and they should receive science-based information about better alternatives to cigarettes. We want to share the results of our study on the smoke-free product and welcome any organization to verify our research findings.” he added.

Designing a Smoke-Free Future

Philip Morris (Thailand) Limited “PMTL” – an affiliate of Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI), is now a leader in the international cigarette import business in Thailand. We commenced the import and sale of PMI’s tobacco brands since 1991 and employ approximately 400 talented Thai employees to whom we attribute our corporate culture and business results in designing a smoke-free future. Additionally, the greatest contribution we are making towards sustainability is to address the impact of smoking on health. We are now building our future on smoke-free products that are a much better consumer choice than continuing to smoke cigarettes. Our goal is that these products ultimately replace cigarettes to the benefit of adult smokers, society, our company and our shareholders. For more information, see www.pmi.com and www.pmiscience.com.
